about

What struck me about this Psalm is my initial reaction to the first verse. "But I will lift up my heart and raise my eyes high! And nothing is too great for me!" said me... The language sounded harsh, melancholy and frankly a bit debasing. But perhaps the words revealed more about my heart and inward-focused attitudes than anything particular about the words themselves. In reality, to borrow from Josh Moody, who wrote Journey to Joy,

"Instead of saying 'you can be whatever you want to be' [...], it is saying 'be who you were made to be'."

In other words, don't raise your eyes too high... but be obedient to the Lord and set your eyes on Christ. Don't occupy yourself with things too great for you... but be humble and strive to obey God as He gifts you because He loves you... a lot. And we see this chiefly in the love of Christ in his death on the cross for our good and His glory. With this little correction on a second or third read, I began to see more vividly the beauty of humility in light of greatness and glory we see in Christ. And, what's more, these sentiments and the corresponding understanding of humility in light of the gospel are not isolated to this solitary spot in scripture, so take heart, be confident in the word and take a couple minutes to better understand what the passage is saying. There's something great to take in here. Enjoy!

O Lord

Verse 1
my heart is not lifted up
my eyes are not raised too high
I do not occupy myself
with things too great and too marvelous for me

Verse 2
but I have calmed and quieted my soul
I don’t just want blessing, I want You

Verse 3
O israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forever
