about

Wow! So many verses... I had gotten used to smaller Psalms and it made them really digestible as decent-sized modern songs with repeated lyrics, but this one! Anyway, I arranged it so the structure was sort of hymn-ish. You sing 2 4-line verses with a little 2-line refrain that's repeated. The whole song is a giant running narrative, but honestly the structure and lyric are simple enough that a few times through the words are sticking in my head... so that's a good sign.

Anyway, I love the lyrics that ended up being Round 4 of the song. "I'll bless abundant her provisions; I'll satisfy her poor with bread." They made me think on Jesus time in the dessert without food, his words on man not living by bread alone, the breaking of bread at the last supper, his body crushed for our sin, the sufficiency of Christ alone for our salvation. He provides, He makes a way, He certainly has provided for His people.

lyrics

ROUND 1 - v15
Verse 1
remember, O LORD, in David's favor,
all the hardships he endured,
how he swore to the LORD
and vowed to the Mighty One

Verse 2
“I will not enter my house
or get into my bed,
I will not give sleep to my eyes
or slumber to my eyelids,

Refrain 1
until I find a place for my God,
a dwelling place for the Mighty One.”

ROUND 2 - v6-10
Verse 3
behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah;
we found it in the fields of Jaar.
“let us go up to his dwelling place;
let us worship at his feet!”

Verse 4
arise, O LORD, to your resting place,
you and all your glory.
let your priests be clothed with righteousness,
and let your saints all shout for joy

Refrain 2
for the sake of your servant David,
don’t turn away the face of your anointed

ROUND 3 - v11-13
Verse 5
the LORD swore an oath to David
from which he will not turn back:
“one of the sons of your own body
I will set upon your throne.

Verse 6
if your sons keep my covenant
and my testimonies taught,
their sons also forever
they shall sit on your throne.”

Refrain 3
for the LORD He has chosen Zion;
he desired it for his dwelling place:

ROUND 4 v1418
Verse 7
“this is my resting place forever;
here I will dwell, I’ve desired it.
I’ll bless abundant her provisions;
[I’ll] satisfy her poor with bread.

Verse 8
I’ll clothe her priests in my salvation,
and her saints will shout for joy.
I’ll make a horn to sprout for David;
and a lamp for my anointed.

Refrain 4
His enemies I’ll clothe with shame,
but on him his crown will shine.”
